CYBER LIBEL AWARENESS: THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK, POST, OR COMMENTIn the Philippines, online posts are not “just jokes” or “just opinions” when they damage a person’s reputation. Under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (RA 10175), cyber libel is a real criminal offense.
WHAT CAN BE CYBER LIBEL?You may be liable if you:
• Post false accusations against a person online
• Share malicious or damaging content on Facebook, TikTok, or other platforms
• Comment with insulting statements that harm someone’s reputation
• Publish or repost defamatory content with intent to shame or damage
REMEMBER:Not all opinions are protected. Statements that are false, malicious, and publicly posted online may lead to legal consequences.
HOW TO FILE A CYBER LIBEL COMPLAINT:- Save evidence (screenshots, links, timestamps)
- Prepare a sworn complaint-affidavit
- File with authorities such as the National Bureau of Investigation Cybercrime Division, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group, or the Office of the Prosecutor
- Undergo preliminary investigation
- Case may proceed to court if probable cause is found
